Abstract
A passive, precision, self-alignment technique is reported for coupling arrays of VCSELs and photodiodes (PDs) to an array of buried channel waveguides which significantly reduces the cost of optical interconnections. As a result a practical prototype multiple channel 10 Gb/s duplex optical connector is designed, constructed and its alignment precision assessed. The dependence of optical coupling loss on misalignments in x, y and z of VCSELs and PDs allows the alignment limits to be assessed and its reproducibility on multiple mating cycles of the connector is reported. The first recorded measurements of cross-talk between waveguides when the connector is misaligned are reported.
