Multipolar evolution in two- and N-photon excitation
Abstract
A tensor density-matrix approach to two-photon absorption (TPA) and multiphoton absorption (MPA) is developed. The method is particularly valuable when the nature of the (inevitably) polarised excited-state array needs to be described accurately. Several specific examples are given in TPA including the case when a resonant intermediate state evolves in time. The limiting degrees of orientation or alignment are calculated for MPA and numerical values are given. The monitoring of the polarised excited array by single-photon fluorescence is discussed and explicit expressions given for the linear and circular polarisation ratios of this fluorescence.
