Clinical Dilemmas in Primary Liver Cancer
Abstract
The high incidence and overall poor prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) necessitate the urgent development of new treatments for this condition. Our increasing understanding of HCC development and progression make targeted gene therapy a potentially powerful therapeutic technique to kill or correct the phenotypes of these cells. After years of failure, substantial progress in the efficiency of gene transfer technology has recently resulted in impressive clinical successes for a variety of disorders including cancer. The purpose of this article is to review the prospects of targeted delivery of therapeutic genes to HCC using advances in gene transfer technology as well as a better insight into the pathogenesis of this disorder. © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
