Abstract
The work reported addresses the need for a rapid process optimisation step of flocculation, through the implementation of a microfluidic high-speed imaging setup that allows dynamic, real-time observation of flocculation growth kinetics. A micro-channel (Figure la) 500 Jim wide and 61 cm long was fabricated on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), and the growth of flocs formed from S. cerevisiae homogenate and poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) observed at different points along the channel. A computational image-analysis technique measured the floc sizes from high-speed images and the results were compared to data from a commercially-available particle-sizing instrument.
