Abstract
Any transition to 'a hydrogen economy' will amount to a major technological transition. Four possible transitions are discussed in the context of the literature on technological transitions. Responses from both experts and focus groups to such projections of such transitions show that they raise major issues of public acceptability, which are also explored. It is clear that any kind of hydrogen transition is unlikely to come about without the systematic and determined implementation of public policy and the paper ends by examining the kinds of public policy that might be required for the hydrogen economy to become a reality.
