Abstract
Despite its long distance from the sea, Bogotá has historically been the richest city in Colombia, with a diversified economy and a skilled population. Since the 1990s successive governments have made decisive governance and environmental interventions on public transport, public space, walking, cycling, risk reduction and social welfare. Informality, poverty and income inequality, as well as coordination with neighboring municipalities about future growth remain substantial challenges.
