A simple hydraulic model for the hydrodynamic loading on a heaving horizontal cylinder with a small damage opening at its keel
Abstract
A simple hydraulic model is derived based upon the use of hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressures for an intact horizontal semi-immersed circular cylinder to drive quasi-steady orifice flow through a small damage opening. Satisfactory agreement is obtained with results from physical model tests for the case of a cylinder where the air above the free surface of the floodwater is freely vented. Use of the theoretical model is extrapolated to consider the case at full scale of a cylinder with trapped air between the free surface of the floodwater and a damage control deck.
