Professor Alister Hart is the UCL chair of orthopaedics and a consultant hip surgeon. He leads a research team of surgical technologists, based at the UCL Stanmore Campus & RNOH NHS Trust, focussed on Implant Science and Surgical Imaging Technology. This includes the London Implant Retrieval Centre (LIRC), the RNOH/UCLH BRC collaboration and the Running for Science project.
The BBC nicknamed him the “Hospital Hip Detective”. His work on the effect of running on the knees was published by: The New York Times , The Times and The Telegraph. His work on implants has been disseminated by The Guardian and BBC Radio 4.
He trained at Caius College, Cambridge, then Guy's and St Thomas' and the RNOH.


Professor Alister Hart has pioneered the use of 3D printing for hip surgery (www.complexhipsurgery.com), robotic surgery and the analysis of orthopaedic implants (www.lirc.co.uk).
His research on implant science has led to changes to international health policy; development of clinical guidance in the UK and abroad; changes to clinical practice and subsequent cost savings.
He has published this work in >200 papers (first or last author on >100) with 200 co-authors, including in the journal Nature. These papers have had >5000 citations and an h index of 39.
He has been Principal Investigator on 26 grant awards since 2006 with total funding of over £8 million from research councils (EPSRC and MRC), Innovate UK, Technology Strategy Board, NIHR, charities and industry.
Professor Alister Hart supervises his group of 6 PhD students (10 previously completed), some clinical and some non-clinical. He has supervised 25 iBSc student projects, with >90% of these students publishing at least 1 journal paper.
He has examined for medical finals, MD degrees, and PhD degrees at 5 universities (Imperial, UCL, Cardiff, Warwick, East Anglia). He was the external examiner for the Cardiff MSc course in orthopaedic engineering, 2012 to 2015.
He is the leader for the clinical modules for the 2 UCL MSc’s in musculoskeletal science and Physical Rehabilitation and lectures on courses for: iBSc, Basic sciences course, Knee replacement course, Acetabular reconstruction course.
He has convened, organized and financed 7 international meetings held at the Wellcome, The Royal College of surgeons and the Royal Society of Medicine.
