The dominant theme was initially the immunopathology of tuberculosis, with a major emphasis on the interactions of IL-4 and IL-4?2 with mycobacterial infections. This broadened to include the endocrinology and immunoendocrinology of TB. His approach is interdisciplinary, with emphasis on integrative physiology leading to publications on endocrinology, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience and most recently on depression and its links to inflammatory cytokines.
2) Microorganisms and Darwinian medicine.
The diseases that are increasing in incidence in developed countries, (allergies, autoimmune disease and inflammatory bowel disease), are a major research interest, particularly the role that changing exposure to environmental microorganisms is playing in the accompanying dysfunction of regulatory T cells and antigen-presenting cells. This has led clinical trials and publications in the field of allergic disorders.
