My research aims to develop better understanding of the factors underlying acquisition, maintenance and cessation of tobacco use, with a view to facilitating effective interventions to reduce the harms to health that are caused especially by cigarette smoking. Particular interests are: quantification of exposure to passive smoking and the resultant health impacts on nonsmokers; the role of nicotine in regulating intakes from smoking; the interaction between pharmacological, personal, family, and social influences in the development of dependence on cigarettes and smoking cessation
