Biography

Santosh Bhattarai is a lecturer in space geodesy in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) at University College London (UCL) with research interests in astrodynamics and space debris dynamics for orbit prediction and orbit determination, and also, in various aspects of global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) and related technologies. He was awarded a PhD in Global Navigation Satellite Systems from UCL in 2015, a BSc in Mathematics and Physics from the University of York in 2009, and is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2013. 

Research Groups
Research Summary


  • High-fidelity orbit prediction for enhanced space situational awareness (since 2017).
  • Investigations into satellite clock mis-synchronisation errors in global navigation satellite systems (2010-2015).
  • Modelling reference timescale offsets between two global navigation satellite systems, GPS and Russia's GLONASS (2012-2014).
  • Development work on the next-generation of non-conservative force models for several missions including the GNSS satellites of GPS, Galileo and Beidou, the InSAR satellite Sentinel-1, the altimetry satellite Jason-2, and others (since 2013).
  • Development of a spacecraft orbit simulation software, the UCL Orbit Prediction Software, for testing and validation of the next-generation of non-conservative force models (since 2013). 
  • Investigations into the influence of the coupling of spacecraft surface charges with the Earth's magnetic field on satellite trajectories (2014).
