During my PhD with Professor Barry Stripp I identified multiple airway stem cell populations and determined that these likely function as the originating cells for lung cancer (Giangreco 2002; Reynolds 2000; Reynolds and Giangreco 2000; Hong 2001). From June 2004 to May 2009 I decided to gain more experience studying epithelial stem cells with Professor Fiona Watt (Cancer Research UK). In Fionas lab I studied thecontribution of epidermal stem cells to skin aging and carcinogenesis. During this time I made several novel findings related to skin stem cell abundance and intrinsic aging (Giangreco, 2008 Aging Cell and Giangreco, Journal of Investigative Dermatology 2009) as well as the discovery that Tumour suppressor of lung cancer 1 (TSLC1/Necl2) is an important regulator of skin wound repair and epithelial cell migration
(Giangreco, Development 2009). I currently run a research group within the Lungs 4 Living Research Centre (part of the UCL Division of Medicine). My lab is interested in how epithelial adhesion and intrinsic cell signalling regulate airway regeneration and carcinogenesis.
Irreversible lung damage is a leading cause of death and disease, costing the UK economy billions of pounds per year. Diseases caused by irreversible lung damage include squamous, small and non-small cell lung cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and various heritable and spontaneous genetic disorders. Unfortunately treatment options for lung disease remain limited and survival rates for lung cancer in particular have not improved for over 60 years.
The goal of my laboratory's research is to increase our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms driving lung cancer and lung regeneration. We hope to exploit this knowledge in order to develop more effective treatments for repairing irreversibly damaged lungs.
