Biography
After undergraduate studies in Berlin, I obtained a Maîtrise d'Histoire from Lyon II, France (1991) and a PhD from the European University Institute, Florence (1995). I have taught at UCL since 1996 and have had visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton; the École Normale Supérieure, Paris; and the Remarque Institute of NYU.

I am director of UCL's Centre for Transnational History and in 2012 I launched UCL's cross-disciplinary MA in Transnational Studies.

Research Summary

My main area of interest is the cultural and intellectual history of Europe between the late 18th and the early 20th centuries. Most of my work is in the fields of Italian, French, German and Habsburg History, with a specific focus on the transnational flow of ideas, goods and people. A particular field of cross-disciplinary research is European music theatre, in particular nineteenth-century Italian and German opera. For Princeton University Press I am currently completing a book entitled America in Italy. The United States in the Political Thought and the Cultural Imagination of the Risorgimento, 1763-1865. I have started work on a new project entitled Transnational Monarchy. Rethinking the Habsburg Empire, 1804-1918, funded by the Leverhulme Trust.
