Research Summary

My research is centred on Historical Bibliography and Cataloguing.

My co-authored text Practical Cataloguing: AACR, RDA and MARC21 (Facet, 2012) was the first to cover new international standard RDA, while articles include cataloguing history and theory as well as current practice. My next book, Cataloguing and Decision-making in a Hybrid Environment will be published by Facet in December 2013.

In Bibliography, I am particularly interested in methodological questions concerning provenance and bibliographic description, particularly the challenges posed by 19th and 21st century publications. I am currently researching English poet Walter de la Mare and using his working library (housed at Senate House Library) as a test-bed for different methodological approaches. I am also interested in the synergies between traditional Bibliography and Digital Humanities and in the emerging sub-discipline of Digital Bibliography.

Library and Information Studies is a practice-based discipline, and I am active in researching, presenting and publishing on the education of the next generation of cataloguers and rare books professionals.

Teaching Summary

I teach on one core module (Cataloguing & Classification) and two optional modules (Historical Bibliography and Advanced Cataloguing & Classification) for the MA Library and Information Studies. I also teach Historical Bibliography on the MA/MSc Digital Humanities. I supervise 10-20 Masters dissertations a year, mostly in Cataloguing, Bibliography, Rare Books Curation and Library History.
