My research group is focussed on ventricular arrhythmogenesis in inherited arrhythmia syndromes including Brugada, long QT syndrome and cardiomyopathic disease. This involves in vivo high density mapping studies of the heart using basket catheters, epicardial sock recording and non-invasive ECG Imaging (ECG Vue) in these patients. The basis of Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome is being studied through clinical and genetic screening of affected families and molecular autopsy. Clinical studies also include AF mechanisms, trials of novel ablation strategies versus conventional techniques & the assessemnt of novel subcutaneous/leadless pacing and defibrillation technologies.
At a more fundamental level, we are investigating the cellular & molecular basis of arrhythmia in ARVC, long QT and Brugada models (in collaboration with Professor Andrew Tinker, UCL & QMUL) & ischaemic heart disease.
The in vivo electrodynamics and mechanics of the failing human ventricle are fundamental to the development of ventricular arrhythmia in heart failure patients. This is being investigated using a combination of MR imaging and high density mapping through collaborations with the UCL & KCL imaging sciences groups. Research is supported by project grants and fellowships from MRC, Welcome Trust, BHF, Heart Research UK, Barts Charity and UCL CBRC.
