Biography

He started working at the UCL in 1990 as a Sir Jules Thorne Research Fellow and then as a MRC funded fellow. He was appointed Senior Lecturer in 1995 and Professor in 2002 at UCL. He was seconded to be the Director of the MRC General Practice Research Framework from 2005 to 2012 and was the Head of Department of  Primary Care and Population Health at UCL from 2006-2015.  He is currently the Chair of the Health Education England and NIHR Integrated Clinical Academic Clinical Doctoral Research Fellowship Committee and the Indian Alliance Wellcome Trust Department of Business and Technology Board.  He is a NIHR Senior Investigator and part time general practitioner at the Keats Group Practice in Hampstead which has a strong focus on research.

Research Summary

Irwin Nazareth’s research interests include the management of mental health problems in primary care.  This includes the management of  in primary care of: physical health in people with psychological disorders; the prevention and management of depression and unexplained medical symptoms such as dizziness and sexual dysfunction; the evaluation of existing and new interventions and the implementation of research finding in clinical practice.  His methodological expertise is in the design and conduct randomised trials of complex interventions and the analysis of large clinical databases such CPRD and THIN for epidemiological, aetiological and health service research.  He has over the years secured funding from the MRC, the Wellcome Trust, Cancer Research UK, The European Commission and the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) for these programmes of research.  He is currently the Director of the PRIMENT Clinical Trials Unit that has a large portfolio of randomised trials on primary care and mental health. His international research interests include research on primary care and mental health in Europe, India, South Africa and China.      

Teaching Summary

Doctoral supervision of PhDs in Primary Care and Mental Health and Post doctoral supervision of research programmes.

Teaching clinical skills in general practice to M.B.B.S students and running seminar for early career clinical fellows in research as applied to practice.   

Continuing medical education of GPs and consultants on applied research and implementation of research to clinical practice.
