Joe is one of the Senior Research Fellows for the unit and plays a key role in helping to increase the research capacity of Marie Curie Cancer Care. He has been part of the team for 10 years and has a background in health psychology.


Joe’s role involves developing and running research studies to increase the knowledge within palliative care. His main research interests include the assessment and delivery of psychological care in palliative care, the delivery of palliative care to patients with non-malignant disease and the development of carer interventions.


As a mixed methods researcher, Joe has been involved in a variety of quantitative and qualitative studies which include a UK validation of the Distress Thermometer, a national survey of GP Registrars perceptions of their palliative care education and an evaluation of specialist palliative care day services.


He has recently finished a pilot study looking at the relationship between acceptance and key rehabilitation outcomes in patients with palliative care needs and has been Principal Investigator on two external grants (Kidney Research UK and the British Renal Society) to explore the experiences of patients with end stage kidney disease who are on maximum conservative management and their close persons.
