Joanna works with local partners in Nepal to build research capacity and increase understanding of the issues affecting women and children's health, and retention of rural health workers. She is also part of a research consortium working with partners in Malawi, Bangladesh and India to research Maternal and Child Survival. She is interested in using participatory approaches to research and development, conducting process evaluations to understand the results of outcome evaluations, and is specializes in qualitative research methodology.
Joanna is interested in Global Health, and has been working with partner organisations in Nepal to research health systems, and maternal and newborn health issues. She has used formative research to develop participatory interventions mobilising communities and women to enable improvements in health outcomes. Current research interests are in local management of health facilities, retention of rural health workers, quality of care, measuring and understanding women's empowerment, inequalities in participation in community based organisations, and participatory community based interventions.
Joanna has been co-ordinating and teaching the Qualitative Research in Action MSc module at the Institute of Child Health from 2004 to 2011. She has also been responsible for the supervision of MSc students.
In Nepal her work involves building research capacity among colleagues in partner organisations and she has conducted training in Qualitative research methods, Participatory evaluation methods, Process evaluation and Action research.
Joanna currently supervises two Phd students.
