I completed an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2000, then worked in health insurance before moving to the Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust in 2002 running their postgraduate training courses. In December 2004, I was appointed as the manager of the IDRN. Since being in post, I have completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Epidemiology, by distance learning with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). I have also been trained in health policy, systematic reviews, and global health. I will be completing a PhD by published works with the Amsterdam Institute of Global Health before the end of 2015.
I work on the Infectious Disease Research Network (IDRN, www.idrn.org), a Department of Health-funded project to increase the capacity of infectious disease research in the UK.
I am also leading on a large analysis of UK research investments in infectious disease with colleagues Joseph Fitchett (King's College London) and Rifat Aun (Harvard School of Public Health). The Research Investments in Global Health (ResIn) study has published widely in high-impact journals, including Lancet journals, Vaccine and Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy. See the study website at www.researchinvestments.org.
One further project I am collaborating on is a study investigating scabies outbreaks in residential care. This is with collaborators from Brighton & Sussex Medical School and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, and is taking place across the south east of England.
I am particularly widely published in the area of research investments, and have authored several publications in high impact journals such as Lancet Infectious Diseases, Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy and Nature Reviews Microbiology. As well as the publications listed, I have also reviewed papers on behalf of journals (including Lancet and BMJ journals), been keynote and invited speaker at national and international conferences, done some short course teaching, reviewed grants for the NIHR, and I sit on the NIHR HTA Primary Care, Community and Preventive Interventions Panel. I am guest editor on a forthcoming supplement for Journal of Infectious Diseases relating to norovirus infection.
