I completed an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences in 2000, then worked in health insurance before moving to the Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust in 2002 running their postgraduate training courses. In December 2004, I was appointed as the manager of the IDRN. Since being in post, I have completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Epidemiology, by distance learning with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). I have also completed a short course on Health Policy at LSHTM
I work on the Infectious Disease Research Network (IDRN, www.idrn.org), a Department of Health-funded project to increase the capacity of infectious disease research in the UK.
I am also leading on a large analysis of UK research investments in infectious disease with colleagues Joseph Fitchett (LSHTM), Rifat Aun (Imperial), Mary Cooke and Fatima Wurie (UCL). See http://www.researchinvestments.org for more information.
One further project I am collaborating on is a study investigating scabies outbreaks in residential care. This is with collaborators from Brighton & Sussex Medical School and the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.
As well as the publications listed, I have also written for scientific magazines such as The Microbiologist (Society for Applied Microbiology) and Nursing Standard, as well as occasional blog-posts for internet sites such as The 21st Floor (http://www.thetwentyfirstfloor.com/?tag=mike-head).
