Research Summary
My particular  expertise is in the evaluation of health care / public health interventions and policies across the NHS.  

Major themes of my work are
1. the determinants of health service use;
2. examining the relationship between health care inequalities and health inequalities across socio-economic and other groups (particularly age and gender);
3. developing and experimentally evaluating interventions to reduce the socio-economic gradient in health care use;
4. the evaluation of health care and public health programmes, with particular reference to variations across socio-economic and other groups; 
5. analysis of NHS policy;
6. clinical decision making in areas of uncertainty.

I am Chief investigator on the following major research programmes:

Director of NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care (CLAHRC): North Thames

Designing and evaluating strategies to reduce the social gradient in health service use: ASCEND Project (NIHR Applied Programme Grant)

Improving the effectiveness of multidisciplinary team meetings for patients with chronic diseases. (NIHR HSR Research Programme)

The relative influences of health care and risk factors on future longevity across socio-demographic groups in England. (L&G)

Evaluation of the Planning and Delivery of NHS London’s Olympic and Para-Olympic Programme (NHS London)

I am also a co-applicant on the following major research programmes:

NIHR School for Public Health Research (NIHR, UCL Lead, Professor Anne Johnson)

Policy Research Unit in Cancer Awareness, Screening and Early Diagnosis (DHPRP, Led by Professor Stephen Duffy, QMUL. I lead the Inequalities and Early Diagnosis Themes)

Evaluation of Specialist Cancer Services for Teenagers and Young Adults (NIHR Applied Programme Grant, led by Dr Jeremy Whelan)

Innovative use of antibiotics in the prevention COPD exacerbations (NIHR Applied Programme Grant, led by Professor Wisia Wedzicha)
