Biography

I have been at UCL since 2006. Before that I was at the LSE in the Department of Geography and Environment for 16 years. Prior to that I taught at the University of East London (Departments of Applied Economics and Land Mangement) and De Montfort University (School of Land and Building Studies). I have a BA in Land Economy (with Economics Part 1) and a PhD in Urban and Regional Planning Studies. I am a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and an accredited Mediator.

Research Summary

I am a specialist on governing for urban sustainability. I have researched a wide variety of policy domains relevant to urban sustainability, including most recently urban energy. Conceptually I have used network metaphors to understand processes of governing, including social capital, as well as deploying discourse analysis. Over recent years, I have been exploring the contribution of socio-technical studies to understanding governing for urban sustainability. This has led to an emphasis on the construction of knowledge within planning processes, the role of classificatory systems (such as BREEAM and sustainability indicators) and the implications of socio-materiality (for example, within the assemblages and financial models of urban energy initiatives).

Teaching Summary

My main teaching is in two areas. Sustainable Property: investment, development and valuation is a module within the MSc Sustainable Urbanism although it is available to other students. Governance for Urban Sustainability is a two-module specialism available to MSc International/Spatial Planning and other students where space permits. I also contribute sessions to other modules on: sustainable cities, mediation, social capital, social network analysis, dissertation writing and skills. Across UCL, I lead on the Grand Challenges Summer School on cross-disciplinarity for research students.
